Aquaculture

Aquaculture has been heralded as the solution to global crisis in fisheries. But this solution has a big problem. If one is going to sustain a large increase in global aquaculure, the feed comes from harvesting the fish that is the current food-base of the desireable oceanic and coastal fishes. Thus, unless we invent alternative feeds, i.e. through genetically modified crops that produce the proteins needed to sustain fish growth, choosing an increase in aquaculture can lock us into a situation were the oceans stay the barren wastelands they are becoming today.
