This requires 3-4 years of study, including a degree project of at least 18 weeks. This project must be publicly presented and discussed. Graduate studies include the Licentiate of Philosophy degree, which normally requires 2-2.5 years of study. It consists of almost a year of course-work, plus a written thesis which is presented and discussed at a public seminar. It is common for Licentiates to continue their studies with further course-work and scientific research on the same general theme for another 2-2.5 years to obtain the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The Ph D thesis is also publicly discussed and defended.
