Research and teaching in the Department of Systems Ecology at Stockholm University focuses on the study of ecosystems and on sustainable use of natural resources

We study both basic and applied ecological problems, with an emphasis on coastal and marine ecosystems and coupled social-ecological systems.

Research
We have a long tradition of research on the Baltic Sea and its drainage basin. The Department has been involved in the development of the interdisciplinary field of ecological economics, and we perform research in many developing countries, mostly in the tropics. We view humanity as an integral part of ecosystems, and apply a systems perspective in our analyses of how ecosystems are used and abused by humans and on the interplay between societal development and the life-supporting environment.

The Department provides a stimulating research environment and there is close collaboration with the Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University and the Beijer International Institute of Ecological Economics at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Södertörn and Gotland University Colleges and the Institute of Coastal Research of the Swedish Board of Fisheries.

Teaching
The Department has PhD-programs in Marine Ecology, Marine Ecotoxicology and Natural Resource Management, and provides undergraduate courses and opportunities to do degree projects in these research fields.

Equipment and resources
The Department has laboratories equipped for chemical analyses of natural water and sediment for research on plankton, benthic organisms, and fish as well as for ecotoxicological studies. We have aquarium facilities for experiments under controlled environmental conditions.
The Department also has long data series from the coastal and open Baltic. The Stockholm Marine Research Centre provides access to a modern field laboratory on the Baltic coast - the Askö Laboratory - and ship-time for offshore research in the open Baltic.
